Hunt for Best Ipoh Foods: Ipoh Roadtrip 2015

Hello, everybody! I recently went to Ipoh for a short getaway. I had been to a few famous eating stalls around Ipoh city and they were really good and worth trying!

It was only a short trip, so I could only recommend you a few MUST-eat foods around Ipoh and the best thing was they are all nearby to each other!

Pork satay (猪肉沙爹) - Restoran Thean Chun

Restoran Thean Chun is basically an old style coffee shop. The shop is located at Jalan Bandar Timah, next to another coffee shop called Kong Heng. Some people said that it is located in an alley in between these two coffee shops. But I thought more accurately it is actually attached to Restoran Thean Chun. It is also next to a mini branch of Lou Wong Nga Choi Gai (Restoran Tauge Ayam).

There are plenty of food variety here. The one that I would highly recommend to you is pork satay (Words can't describe how good it tastes!) The meat is fresh and soft. The pork satay's taste is enhanced even better when it is dipped in satay paste. Even if you are not a meat lover, the combination will still stimulate your salivary gland and make you crave for more!

Totally recommend this!

Restoran Kong Heng

The satay stall is situated  in an alley
in between Restoran Thean Chun and Restoran Kong Heng.

You can choose either chicken or pork satay.
Besides, they are also selling pork intestines and liver.

Pork satay

Yum! Initially, I ordered 25 sticks but ended up with adding another 15 more sticks.

Chee Cheong Fun (猪肠粉) - Restoran Thean Chun

There is another stall beside the satay which selling Gai Xi Hor Fun and Chee Cheong Fun. I didn't get to try the Gai Xi Hor Fun, but only managed to order a plate of Chee Cheong Fun. You can either order a plain or meat-filled Chee Cheong Fun. It is smooth, content is fresh and not too oily. Some stalls may have added too much cooked oil to enhance the taste, however, it was not too overwhelmed for this. It is worth trying!

The chee cheong fun basically contained
3 different types of flavor based on your preference.

Caramel egg custard (炖蛋) - Restoran Thean Chun

It is ordered together with drinks. There will be a person (most likely an 'aunty') who approached to order beverage and you can mention to her that you want a plate of caramel egg custard. It is smooth, soft and sweet. For dessert lover, you may adore it!

Big Tree Foot (忠记兵如港口大树头炸料粉)

It is located at 652, Jalan King, Pasir Pinji Ipoh. Basically, it is a Yong Tau Fu stall. The stall open everyday at 830- 500 pm, except Wednesday. (I forgot to capture shop signage after seeing the foods there =P) I had this for my brunch. There are plenty of choices, namely bitter gourd, lady-finger, egg plant, long bean, fried Wan Tan, fried Fu Pei, and etc. All the vegetables are fully stuffed with fish flesh and best thing is the ingredients taste really fresh and they do not taste fishy at all! To me, my least favourite would be the long beans as it tastes way too greasy for me. (But, it's totally depends on your own taste!)

You can also order your favourite type of noodle to match with the ingredients that you have picked. I ordered a bowl of Lou Shu Fen and Asam Laksa. If you like something fast and easy, then Lou Shu Fen is your best choice. It tastes really plain and not too oily, and it is perfect when you eat together with the fried ingredient whereas for Asam laksa, it tastes really concentrated, hot and rich in sardine fish and other vegetables. Overall, both noodles are awesome!

Lou Shu Fen

As you can see, the lady finger is gigantic and content is fully filled with fish flesh.
The bitter gourd is really fresh and I really like the egg very much. They are sinfully delicious!

Funny Mountain Tau Fu Fah (奇峰豆腐花)

Tau Fu Fah a.k.a Soybean Curd, or Soy Custard is traditionally known as a Chinese snack or dessert (whichever you think it is) which made from Soybean into a very soft, smooth texture "pudding" serving with a drizzle of sugar syrup on top of it.

And yes, the most well-known place where you can find the best Tau Fu Fah in Ipoh will be Funny Mountain. It is located at 49, Jalan Theater, Ipoh. There is also drive-through service where you can literally choose to have your bowl of Tau Fu Fah in the car.

Before I came to this place, I wondered how good would it taste as I heard people were fawning about it. After I had a taste with it, it completely proved its quality to me. The curd was so smooth and soft that it almost melted instantly in your mouth. So, don't forget to try this yourself when you are here in Ipoh.

Sin Eng Heong (新荣香)

Kaya puff! Kaya puff!!! No doubt it was the tastiest and crispiest Kaya puff that I ever tried! This is definitely a must-try food in Ipoh and highly recommend it as souvenirs to share with your friends and family who have yet been here. It is located at 64, Jalan Mustapha  Al-Bakri, Ipoh.

I did not get to take much photos in the shop as it was raining on the day of my arrival at the shop. (People and things went a bit messy) However, as you can see, there were many people queuing up to buy the freshly-baked Kaya puff from the shop. I bought few packets as souvenirs and best part is that the Kaya Puffs still remained crispy, fresh and rich in Kaya taste even when we ate it after three days later.

Remember to share it with your loved ones!

The queue was even longer when I started to line up,
but it was really worth though. Must try!

Lastly, just a glimpse of where I stayed for my short getaway in Ipoh.

I stayed in one these budget hotels called Golden Roof Hotel which located at Jalan Ampang Baru 6A, Pusat Perdagangan Ampang Baru, 31350 Ipoh, Perak. When I booked it through Agoda.com, it was around RM 98 inclusive of all taxes for a deluxe room. As far as I know, the hotel was quite new as it only established since 2013.

The hotel is located inside a residential area and it was roughly about 10 minutes drive from the town. Therefore, if you wish to stay near to the town, it might be a least convenient choice for you. But if you do prefer a more quiet and private environment, it would be a good spot for relaxation.

The hotel room was clean, cozy and comfortable for one night stay, although it was a bit small. To me, most important thing is the hotel appeared new and clean in the way it should be. Toilet was spacious enough and it was well-maintained. Hotel staffs were friendly, too. In conclusion, it was better than expectation and definitely worth for a short stay.

P/S: I do not have any collaboration with the hotel. It was solely based on my personal experience and comments that I wanted to share with all of you and hopefully it would be helpful for you to make plannings when it's your turn to travel to Ipoh.

Happy Holiday and Safe Trip, Everyone!!!
